What Is Sharia-Compliant Investing?

Sharia-compliant investing, also known as Islamic finance or Shariah-compliant finance, refers to an investment approach that adheres to the principles of Islamic law. Sharia-compliant investing is guided by ethical and religious considerations, and it prohibits investments in activities or businesses that are deemed incompatible with Islamic principles.

Key Principles:

Avoidance of Riba (Usury/Interest):

Sharia prohibits the payment or receipt of interest (riba). As a result, investments in conventional financial instruments that involve interest payments are not permissible in Sharia-compliant investing.

Avoidance of Gharar (Excessive Uncertainty):

Sharia-compliant investing avoids excessive uncertainty or ambiguity (gharar). Investments are structured to minimize speculation, promoting stability and transparency in financial dealings.

Avoidance of Haraam (Prohibited) Activities:

Investments in businesses involved in activities such as gambling, alcohol, and pork are (prohibited) in Islamic finance.

Ethical and Social Responsibility:

Sharia-compliant investments emphasize ethical business practices and social responsibility. Companies are expected to adhere to Islamic ethical standards, promoting the betterment of society as a whole.

Profit-and-Loss Sharing:

Mudarabah, a profit-sharing arrangement, is a common feature in Sharia-compliant investments. This ensures that both investors and entrepreneurs share in the risks and rewards, fostering a collaborative and fair financial system.
